Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach on 24 August 1972. DuVernay received support from her Aunt Denise as a little girl. The aunt was on the night shift as nurse so she could follow her passion for art literature and theater during the day. DuVernay loved the film West Side Story, which she brought to her. DuVernay discovered by watching her mother's examples of how art could serve as an instrument for activism. DuVernay was also taught by her mother, with a conscience for social issues, and instilled DuVernay to express herself through art. DuVernay was born in Compton by her parents however, she spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama. This is the place where her father's family has lived for many generations. The father of DuVernay's recollects seeing the historic march of Civil Rights Movement across the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was held in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. DuVernay was inspired by her summers in Selma, and later directed the documentary of King's father, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay earned her Saint Joseph High School diploma in Lakewood California. Following graduation, she attended her first year at the University of California Los Angeles where she earned certificates in English and African American studies. DuVernay was a student at the college at the time she began to become fascinated by the production aspect of the broadcast media. She began as an intern for CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being given an assignment to watch the home and looking through the waste belonging to one of the juries. The tasks that she had to complete left her unhappy which is why, when she decided not to pursue a career in the field of journalism, she was able to move into the industry of publicity. DuVernay got her first job as a publicist at a small production studio right out of high school. She founded The DuVernay Agency, her PR firm, in 1999. In addition to PR, the company created several lifestyle networks such as Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful.
